If this could be written in laymans terms it will help parents understand so much better.
How will this help our children. This is overwhelming.

Is there hope for my child to talk, communicate, understand to be as normal as possible.

      Dear Sue,

Thank you so much for taking the time to visit AnnaKOnline.

I totally understand the requirement to keep articles simple and understandable. I will, on behalf of Professor Turk summarise any technical reports before posting in future.
Your question seems specifically a communication and speech and language query. Am I right?
I will pass your details onto Noelle Hartnett, a Speech and Language Therapist. Does your child have Fragile X, Autism or both?
If you ask more specific questions, I will do my best to point you in the right direction.

      I do hope that helps.

The most common way to have a child diagnosed is to find a multi disciplinary team, in the UK children can be referred by a doctor, pre school teacher or in some cases a parent. I assume it would be similar in South Africa. In the UK you need reports from an educational psychologist, speech and language therapist for the diagnosis to be made. As you know the diagnosis process can be lengthy and you can get some therapy for a child without a diagnosis. I would suggest she discusses this with the school, start the diagnosis process and concurrently begin looking for a speech and language therapist or perhaps an ABA team, I know there are some in the South Africa. Early intervention is obviously very important.

    Dear Sue,

It’s been lovely talking to you by mail. I totally understand how difficult it must be for you. As Noelle states, early diagnosis is the key. May I suggest you contact or at least look into the MIND Institute in the US http://www.ucdmc.ucdavis.edu/mindinstitute/

I know of a few families particularly with Fragile X who have been helped by them.

Please let us know how you get on.

    Tally
